ELRHA is an organisation dedicated to supporting partnerships between academic and humanitarian communities around the world.
Yesterday ELRHA launched a new Rapid Response Grants Facility to help address the lack of evidence on public health interventions in humanitarian crises by enabling research to take place in the acute phase of an emergency.
The facility is part of ELRHA's Research for Health in Humanitarian Crises (R2HC) programme, launched earlier this year and funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Department for International Development (DFID).
The R2HC programme aims to improve health outcomes by strengthening the evidence base for public health interventions in humanitarian crises. A key requirement, applications for funding must be collaborative between a research institute and a humanitarian organisation.
The practical and ethical challenges of implementing research following a rapid-onset crisis, such as a civil conflict or a natural disaster, mean there is a limited evidence base on how to implement cost-effective health interventions in such settings. The Rapid Response Grants Facility will pre-approve research proposals so that if relevant crises occur, grants would be triggered, funds released, and teams deployed far quicker than conventional research grants allow.
Up to £1m is available to support the Rapid Response Grants Facility. Through a competitive and independent funding committee process, a number of research proposals will be pre-approved, of which a proportion will be activated over the two year lifetime of the grant.
