The major challenges of food insecurity in Nigeria for in 2023 includes prolonged conflict/insecurity, high inflation rates/soaring food commodity prices, funding cuts, limited access to market, farming and grazing lands and some environmental factors such as flooding and erratic rainfall. According to Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) 2023 the Food Security Sector requires US$ 470 million to reach a targeted 2.5 million and 2.3 million people food assistance and agricultural livelihoods, respectively out of the 4.4 million people projected to be food insecure in the lean season of 2023. Food Security Sector partners will prioritize assistance to LGAs with the most vulnerable groups, targeting people in Cadre Harmonise (CH) Phases 3 and above. Of these, 47 per cent are in Borno, 30 per cent in Yobe and 23 per cent in Adamawa. They will include contingency planning for new arrivals of IDPs and/or returnees.

In January 2023, 1.7 million people were assisted with emergency food assistance, and around 27 thousand with agricultural livelihoods support in BAY states by food security sector Partners.
