Country overview

Located in West Africa at the heart of the Sahel, Niger has a largely undiversified economy that remains heavily dependent on agriculture. Despite ongoing efforts to improve the situation, poverty remains a major challenge. In 2024, the extreme poverty rate stood at 45.3%. This figure is expected to decline to 35.8% by 2027, driven by strong projected growth in the agricultural sector.

However, food security prospects for 2025 are highly concerning. According to the December 2024 Cadre Harmonisé analysis, 2.2 million people—representing 8% of the population—are projected to face severe food insecurity during the 2025 lean season (June–August), marking a 31% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Amid growing needs, food security partners have targeted 1.1 million of the most vulnerable people and require approximately USD 137.6 million to deliver urgent assistance.
