The 2026 Global Report on Food Crises

What trends or evidence have emerged from 10 years of producing the Global Report on Food Crises? 

🔴 Acute food insecurity remains widespread and entrenched - since 2016, the number of people facing the most severe form of food insecurity (IPC/CH Phase 5) has increased more than nine-fold, from around 155,000 people in two countries and territories to 1.4 million people in six countries and territories. 

🔴 The share of the people facing acute hunger and requiring urgent action has doubled over the past decade. Two famines were confirmed in 2025 for the first time in the report’s history. 

🔴Food crises are increasingly protracted. Over the past decade, 33 countries have appeared in every GRFC edition since 2016, accounting for around 80 percent of all people facing acute food insecurity over that period. 

🔴Throughout the ten-year history of the GRFC, conflict and insecurity has remained a primary driver of acute food insecurity and malnutrition around the world. For countries where conflict and insecurity were the primary driver, the number of people facing high levels of acute food insecurity increased from around 74 million in 21 countries in 2018 to over 147 million in 19 countries in 2025. 

🔴The number of acutely food insecure people in need of urgent action in countries where economic shocks were the major driver have tripled from around 10 million to almost 30 million people over the past 8 years.
