Nigeria is bordered to the north by Niger, to the east by Chad and Cameroon, to the south by the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west by Benin. Nigeria has an area of 910,770 km² (World Bank, 2020), 76.3% of which is arable land (World Bank, 2020). The population of Nigeria in 2021 was around 213.4 million people (World Bank, 2021) and is projected to reach 377.5 million in 2050 (FAOSTAT, 2021).
Agriculture plays a crucial role in the Nigerian economy contributing 30% to the GDP, second to oil and acts as an income-generating sector for most households. (USAID, 2022).


FAOSTAT (2020) reports the top 5 crops produced by area harvested in Nigeria in the year 2020 were cassava (9.1 million ha), maize (6 million ha), yam (5.9 million ha), sorghum (5.7 million ha) and cowpeas (4.7 million ha)
