Food Security Sector Partner Presence Maps - July 2023

In July 2023, 2.5 million people were assisted with emergency food assistance, out of which 1.5 million people were reached through cash modality and 1 million people with in-kind modality; while 180 thousand people were reached with agricultural livelihoods support out of which 58 thousand people were reached through cash modality and 122 thousand people with in-kind modality in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY) states.

About 4.3 million people are projected to be food insecure in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, with over 520,000 being in the emergency phase (phase 4) during the lean season of 2023 as per March 2023 Cadre Harmonise analysis. This also implies that the number of food-insecure people in the three states has consistently been above 4 million since 2020.

In the month of June, food assistance partners started the scale-up efforts to reach more people with emergency food assistance for the next four months, which are the peak of the lean season. In preparation for the lean season, the Sector with the support of partners led a revision of the food assistance strategy including transfer values given the continuous increase in food prices.

The Sector also continued to advocate for an increase in agricultural livelihoods support during this planting season. The Agricultural Livelihoods Guidance Note had earlier been developed in March to support the response, in addition to anticipatory action communication messages prepared for farmers in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. These messages were developed and translated to the respective local languages.

The State governments of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe also announced subsidy programs to boost agricultural production during the main rain season.

The Sector continues to advocate for more land access especially for the affected people in the garrison towns.
