Cropland change detection analysis in hard-to-reach areas

Summary

During 2022, Nigeria experienced cropland change that could be linked to security incidents and population displacement. In the North East region, it is evident that the ongoing conflict has severe impacts on cropland change dynamics and populations.

Borno North is the most affected area by moderate or severe decreases of cultivated areas in North East, affecting around 40% of its population. However, Borno North experienced an apparent some improvement over the past year.

In the North West, the results obtained for 2017-2022 shows that the majority of areas in the states of Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara, have no cropland change. However, 7.5% of the population is affected by the cropland decrease, mostly in the State of Sokoto, making this state the most affected by the cropland decrease in North West.
