Borno and Yobe States Monthly Market Monitoring Report June 2021

The countrywide food inflation rate (year on year) stood at 22.28 percent in May while the Naira exchanged at N498 and N501 to a dollar on the parallel market in June. This has effects on markets in Northeast Nigeria, further eating into traders' margins as well as the purchasing power of market-dependent consumers.

• Compared to May, in June 2021, the staple food prices witnessed relative stability in Borno and Yobe states except for red beans (in MMC and Jere) and maize (in Damaturu) that recorded a minor increase compared to last month. This relative stability is observed against the background of substantial year-on-year increases in staple food prices in both states, particularly for red beans and maize, which increased were 184% and 41% in MMC/Jere.

• The cost of the 70 percent of the Survival Minimum Expenditure Basket (SMEB) for a family of five increased slightly by 2.4 percent from 22,327 Naira (May) to 22,856 Naira (June) in Maiduguri and Jere in Borno State. Similarly, In Damaturu, the SMEB increased marginally by 4.3 percent from 21,142 Naira (May) to 22,054 Naira (June). For SMEB values in other BAY locations
