CFS-Framework for Action for Food Security and Nutrition in Protracted Crises

As humanitarian colleagues around the world work around the clock to ensure that emergency assistance keeps flowing to the most affected amid the pandemic and despite the restrictions, I wanted to reach out to you and bring back to the forefront a good advocacy tool for potential use with governments as leaders mobilise political support for continued and scaled up assistance.

The 11 principles endorsed by governments, civil society, private sector, the UN and other CFS stakeholders back in 2015 in the CFS Framework for Action for Food Security and Nutrition in protracted crises are as relevant as ever in this current crisis. The Framework can be a good advocacy tool for those engaging with governments to remind them of their commitments to reach affected populations, protect them and provide an integrated package of food and nutrition assistance. Some governments are already requesting additional support and technical advice in adjusting programmes to ensure people do not go hungry and nutritional needs are addressed.

With the number of countries in protracted crisis situations rising (an updated list will be included in the forthcoming SOFI 2020 report) and disruption of livelihoods and food systems happening all around, our collective advocacy is required to keep attention on those countries who are already suffering a prolonged or recurrent crisis.  I take this opportunity to also share with a link of a joint op-ed by the CFS and HLPE Chairs and the UN SG’s Special Envoy for the Food System Summit with a call for action to prevent this health crisis turn into a food crisis.
